Welcome teens!
This page contains some important information that every girl and boy should
know about the images in the media.
Women
in the media are almost always attractive and fit a very specific mold.
According to Gerber 2008, there is
a
nearly automatic tendency to categorize a person as either attractive or
unattractive.
There is a general social understanding of how women should look,
causing girls to want to ‘normalize’ their bodies. In fact, for the majority of women, a ‘normalized’
body is
far from normal, causing many girls to be dissatisfied with their physical
appearances.
In
America, there are women of all sizes, but when it comes to media images, it is
an entirely different story. “The
average North American woman is five feet, four inches tall and weighs one
hundred and forty pounds." (Canadian Women’s Health
2007).
